MasterCook Formatting Help

The messages below are taken from messages from folks who have used the program.  They can help you to learn to import recipes into the MasterCook program, saving you time so you don't need to re-type recipes when saving them in the program.  Message #5 is actually a message from me (Kaylin) about how I import recipes into the program myself.

Format @@@@@

If you are looking for the "recipe" to format and import recipes to MasterCook--I learned very quickly the "@@@@@" formula, here it is:

I got it from Rooby's web site (website no longer available)

1st line: Type 5 "@" signs.

2nd line: Recipe title.

3rd line: Blank. *

4th line: This is the notes section. You must have something here, even if all you have is `NOTES'.

5th line: Blank. *

6th line: Start your ingredient list. Be sure to use same format as MC uses, as in "2 cups whole wheat flour", etc. Each ingredient goes on it's own line.

Next line: Blank. *

Next line: Start your directions.

* VERY IMPORTANT: These lines must be truly blank. Occasionally you will have 'invisible' characters in those lines. To prevent frustration, you may want to get in the habit of deleting blank lines and putting new (really!) blank lines in yourself. Also, if you have trouble importing a recipe formatted this way, chances are you've missed a line with 'invisible' characters, so that is the first thing you should check.

I'll try to give you step by step instructions for using MasterCook with AOL email.  I know your frustration, since I've been there! Please print these instructions and you should be able to master the problem!

1. Open your email program on AOL as if you were ready to send someone an email

2. Point/click to the "Start" button from Win95 and bring up "programs", which will take you to "Sierra" (which is how my MasterCook appears)

3. Open your MasterCook, you should see 2 columns, left side heading "All Recipes" and right side is empty

4. Click on anything you want to send, example..appetizers, this will now fill up the right side of your column with all the appetizer recipes.

5. Click once on the recipe you want to email, this will highlight it.

6. Go to the top of your screen and point/click on "edit", which will bring down a menu, point/click on "Copy selected recipe". (this will now copy the recipe that you just highlighted.)

7. Minimize your MasterCook screen so you can go back to your AOL email (just click on the top right box that has a -sign.

8. You should now be back on your email window, just click once where you want to begin you email, you should now have a blinking cursor. Go back to your "edit" (top screen) and pull down the menu, you should see "paste", click on it and your recipe should now appear on your email, just like the one below.

Must have MC and AOL running. I sign on AOL first then go to MC.

1. Select recipe to be exported or recipes by highlighting (click on) them from the open cookbook.

2. Go to Edit on the MC file and click "copy selected recipe" .

3. Minimize MC and click on AOL at bottom of your screen.

4. Click Write and the empty e-mail form shows.

5. Paste recipe to the body of the e-mail. I then make any comments in the body, fill in subject line, and address.

6. Send and it is all done.

7. Repeat process by minimizing AOL and highlight a new recipe.  You're off and running.

This eliminates putting it into another file and it never fails with AOL.  If sending recipes immediately I will use the clip board to hold the ones that I am going to use, and then highlight and send, then remove from the clipboard to keep track of what I'm sending each time I send a recipe to the list.  Just make sure you use all from the clipboard so you don't loose them in a search.

Hi, Kaylin...Love the new formatting, it saves me a step!   Are you aware of Text-to-Mastercook? It's a shareware program you can download and it makes reformatting recipes easy. Here's the url, if you haven't seen it: Text-to-Mastercook

It says text to MC 2, but I have 4.07 and it works fine. It also says there could be problems downloading with W95...I had no trouble at all.   After you get the hang of it, it just takes a minute to format and import a recipe.

Importing recipes from RF4RP into Master Cook 5.0

Step #1 Copy/Paste the recipe you wish to save, into Note Pad or another text editing program. Save the recipe to your desktop, as MCtemp, or another name you will recognize.

Step #2 Open your MasterCook program and go to the cookbook you wish to save the recipe in. From 'file', select 'import'.

Step #3 You will be given the opportunity to locate the file you have saved to your desktop, and then can choose it and select it.

Step #4 Now click on 'import', and the recipe is instantly in your cookbook.

Step #5 Open the recipe and check for any formatting changes you wish to make, and set your catagories/add notes.
