I purchased a large container of apple cider vinegar a while ago. It
keeps developing a film over the top. It is transparent, slimy, yet
seems benign. I am wondering if this is a
mother starter, or if it is just nasty vinegar. This bottle does
not seem to be as strong as others I have purchased, as it is a
generic brand. Richfood brand. I have
been using the vinegar with no ill health affects, but now am
just not sure. I am trying to decide if I should save this and
try to make more vinegar from maybe apple
juice, or it I should just toss it and not take any
chances. Any help or advice or recipes would be appreciated.
Krista
Note from Kaylin: It is best "when in doubt to throw it out" when it
comes to food items. Your local county extension office is a great
resource when it comes to questions like this
one, and I am certain they could give you great advice.

I'll be taking my son
and friends to a "Pick Your Own" orchard to pick blackberries and
blueberries. He wants to make blackberry jam, but I've never made jam of
any kind! Am looking for recipes and guidance
on how long it will keep, etc. Thanks!

For Heather:
This is a very filling taco salad--and it makes a large amount.
Taco Salad
Brown 1 1/2 lb hamburger. Combine with:
1 cut up red pepper
1 diced onion
1 can dark red kidney beans, drained
8 oz bag of cheddar cheese
3 cut up tomatoes
Refrigerate overnight
Right before serving, toss with 3 bags of romaine or lettuce and 1
8oz bottle of Western Dressing--can use more dressing if you prefer
a "sloppier" salad. Serve on top of crushed Doritos with sour cream
and guacamole on the side,. Can serve with some good buns or bread
to make it even more filling!!

Re- Light meal ideas for Heather:
Chef's Salads
Bed of assorted lettuce, scoop of tuna (or chicken) salad in the
middle. Six sliced tomato wedges, 6 bell pepper wedges, 6 cucumber
spears and any additional vegetables you like evenly divided around
the plate, leaving a space for the scoop of tuna or chicken
salad Alternatively, do the same thing but put potato or macaroni
salad in the middle and add strips of ham or other deli meat
alongside the strips of vegetables around the plate. Serve rolls as
well if desired. If you serve dessert, serve a small cookie with a
small scoop of ice cream or sherbet. You do have to prepare the
plates ahead except for the tuna or chicken salad but it makes a
very pretty presentation.

Re- Light meal ideas for Heather:
This isn't outside the norm, but when it's hot the best way to cook
is to drag out the old crock pot. My favorite recipe is:
Chicken Dinner
2 cans cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 can cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or your favorite pieces of
chicken)
Place chicken in crock pot, cover with soups and cook on low all
day. Serve over rice. Makes a delicious gravy.
